When it comes to filling prescriptions, have you ever wondered, “Why there are both name-brand and generic versions of the same drug? Is one better than the other?” This question is a common one, since many patients want to know which version is most effective. For instance, when browsing the shelves of the grocery store, you might be used to seeing the generic version of food items as having bland names, less attractive packaging, and perhaps, you assume it has lower quality ingredients. These assumptions cause many to reach for the brand name version of the product, despite the heftier price. So, can the same be said of medications? Surely, the pricier medication in the flashy bottle is the best choice… right?
The truth is, in the pharmacy world, brand names and a higher price tag does not mean better quality. While brand name drugs may seem more familiar or prestigious, generics are just as effective and much easier on your wallet. So, why is there such a price discrepancy if they’re just as good?
Brand Name vs. Generic
Brand name medications are typically the first version of a drug developed by a pharmaceutical company and are given a trademarked name. The company holds exclusive rights to sell the drug for a while, during which they can recoup the hefty cost of research and development. Then, once the patent expires, other manufacturers are legally allowed to create and sell the same drug under a different name. Introducing: generic drugs.

Generic drugs are essentially just copies of brand name drugs. They contain the same active ingredients, work in the same way, and are used to treat the same conditions. The drugs may differ in shape, colour, or markings, but are otherwise nearly identical. The main difference is that generics are sold at a much lower price, which creates healthy market competition and drives prices down.
Health Canada reviews and approves all drugs that are sold in Canada. Generic drug manufacturers must prove their versions are bioequivalent to the name-brand version, which means they are just as safe and effective. Benefit plans will usually only cover generic medications, unless your doctor has given a medical reason as to why you need to use the brand name version.
Why was I prescribed brand name instead of generic?

If you have been prescribed a brand-name drug, you might not be convinced that generic medications are just as effective. After all, wouldn’t your doctor know what’s best? But there are a few reasons physicians might recommend the brand name version instead.
Although the active ingredients are the same, generics might have different inactive ingredients. The generic might include an ingredient that you are allergic to, in which case you can only use the brand name version. Some doctors may also prescribe brand name medications knowing that patients will be more familiar with it, which can potentially make them feel more comfortable and positive about their treatment. It could also be the case that since the brand name has been around longer, your doctor is just accustomed to prescribing it. None of these reasons have to do with the effectiveness of generics.
Why does my benefit plan only cover generic?
To put it simply, the reason your ARTA Benefit plan only covers generic medication is because they work just as effectively but at a much lower price tag. This leads to better plan sustainability long-term. If all brand name medications were covered by the plans, this would significantly drive up the cost of your benefits and result in higher premiums for everyone. Generics just make sense: for your health, and your bank account.
If there is an instance where your doctor says you are required to use the brand name version over generic, you can still access coverage. There is a Special Authorization Form you must fill out to be approved for coverage by your ARTA Benefit Plan. You can learn more and how to submit the form here.
We hope this helps improve your understanding of generics. As always, if you have any questions about your prescriptions, our knowledgeable pharmacy staff is happy to help!
