Membership Eligibility (Public & Private Sector)

Public Sector - Affiliate Member

Available to public sector employees who have contributed to an Alberta government-sponsored pension plan for five or more years, and surviving spouses.

1. ARTA will accept into affiliate membership the following Government Sector Groups:
     1.1 Retired employees who are vested in any Alberta government pension plan or their surviving spouse
     1.2 Retired employees who are not participating in a government pension plan and who were employees of the government as deputy ministers or executive assistants or their surviving spouse
     1.3 Retired employees who are vested in any Canadian provincial or federal government pension plan, excluding CPP, so long as they are residents of Alberta at the time of application or their surviving spouse

Private Sector - Affiliate Member

Any group that has been reviewed and recommended by ARTA's Health and Wellness Benefits Consultant and approved by the Board of Directors.

2. ARTA will accept into affiliate membership:
     2.1 Retired employees who were members of the United Nurses of Alberta for at least two (2) years or their surviving spouse

3. ARTA will accept into affiliate membership groups from the following Private Sector categories:
     3.1 any group that has been reviewed and recommended by ARTA’s Health and Wellness Benefits Consultant. The review process by the consultant will include the ‘fit’ of the group in terms of close alignment with the professional background and standards of regular ARTA members and to the groups ‘congruency with the insurance risk profile of its membership in the ARTA insurance plan
          3.1.1 Members of the proposed group must have been members (pre- retirement) of a professional organization whose intent was to provide its services to its members
          3.1.2 The professional organization must be a continuing, active organization with an elected executive and must hold an AGM
          3.1.3 The professional organization shall be registered with the Provincial Societies Act or equivalent
          3.1.4 The professional organization must have a minimum membership of at least 40 members
          3.1.5 Members (pre-retirement) must have taken the initiative to maintain their membership in the organization
          3.1.6 Each professional organization must have its own membership policies and guidelines
          3.1.7 In order to qualify for membership in the professional organization, each individual member's professional designation must be recognized by a provincial government
          3.1.8 In order to access the ARTA Extended Health and Dental Plans, a group must be enrolled in an active members' group benefits plan. If potential members are not previously covered by a group plan, then immediately prior to ARTA eligibility, each potential member must be approved for acceptance
     3.2 Any group acceptance for ARTA membership by the ARTA Health Benefits Committee must be reported to the next Board of Directors' meeting
