I am so excited and honoured to be awarded the 2016 ARTA Certificate/Diploma Scholarship, and I cannot thank the association enough for this recognition. I am currently in my last semester of the Human Resources Management Diploma Program at NAIT’s JR Shaw School of Business. This education will provide me with the opportunity to pursue a career in human resources, where I plan to help others during times of difficulty in their employment. I aspire to achieve progressive, yet compassionate, change regarding mental health and wellness in the workforce. With such lofty career endeavours, an unknown professor’s quote keeps me grounded and rings true to my circumstances:

You all have a little bit of ‘I want to save the world’ in you; that is why you are here—in college. I want you to know that it is okay if you only save one person, and it is okay if that one person is you.

As the daughter of two retired teachers, I wholeheartedly thank ARTA, not only for supporting my aspirations, but for supporting the aspirations of all Alberta students.

I am currently in my second year of the Paralegal Diploma Program at Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC. Prior to enrolling in this program, I worked for several years as a legal assistant in both Alberta and British Columbia. This program continues to broaden my knowledge of both procedural and substantive law, while harnessing my legal research and writing skills. I find law to be incredibly fascinating, challenging and creative. Upon graduation, it is my goal to successfully obtain a paralegal position with a law fi rm, legal department or government office that allows me to put my new-found knowledge to good use. In particular, I enjoy analyzing case law to assist lawyers in developing arguments to better support a client’s case. This scholarship allows me to focus my energy on my studies while not having to work at the same time. I would like to thank ARTA for awarding me this scholarship and for recognizing the role that financial contributions play in the overall success of students.

I am very honoured to be one of the recipients of the ARTA scholarships. I will be using it to continue my studies in the field of sign language interpreting. I graduated with distinction from my previous college program, American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Studies, through Lakeland College. I am now enrolled in the Sign Language Interpreter Program, which is a two-year program, also through Lakeland College. With this education, I will be able to accomplish my dream of becoming an interpreter and providing equal and effective communication between the deaf and hearing communities.

Thank you so much again for this opportunity.
