Book Drive UPDATE

Looking Ahead to the Holiday Season: Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association donates over 3,900 books to Operation Friendship Seniors Society

Reflecting a life-long mission to educate and instil a love of reading in others, retired teachers and like-minded professionals in Alberta answered a call to action to fill the empty bookshelves at Operation Friendship Seniors Society (OFSS). The call was more than answered, with 3,339 books dropped off at the ARTA office.

“It is very heartwarming to see how our members have embraced the needs of others and have shared their love of reading with OFSS”
– Daniel Mulloy, ARTA CEO

After ARTA staff volunteering at OFSS noticed the empty bookshelves in the drop-in centre, Daniel Mulloy, CEO of ARTA, asked if ARTA could hold a book drive for the society. With OFSS’s blessing, ARTA put out a call to its 22,000 members (of which 8,000 live in the Edmonton and surrounding area) on social media, its website, and through its e-newsletter. The results were immediate and overwhelming – over the next three weeks, books were dropped off at the ARTA office on a daily basis until over 3,900 were collected at the office.

ARTA staff delivered the books to OFSS’s drop-in centre on November 14, at 10 a.m. The books were received in advance of OFSS’s Christmas Luncheon season, ensuring that they will be accessible to seniors who would like a book to read. What a selection they will have to choose from!
