Garlic Day April 19: Love It for Its Health Benefits
April 19th is Garlic Day! This bulb, a member of the allium family that also includes onions and leeks, is well known for its flavour and its smell—it’s sometimes called ‘the stinking rose’. It’s also increasingly known for its health benefits. For example, it boosts immunity, lowers blood pressure and protects the heart. To maximize the heart and other health benefits of garlic, keep in mind that fresh is healthier than cooked because garlic loses much of its nutritional value when heated.
If you love garlic for its health benefits (or its smell and flavor), enjoy a feast on April 19—and don’t worry about your breath. Just shrug and say, “It’s garlic day.”
