Life-Saving Stroke and Heart Attack Tips

Sherry Robbins, President of ERTA, shares these important tips with us:

I have these 3 steps as a Note in my phone so, if I forget them, I know where to look!!

Tips on what to do when you think you are having a heart attack:

  • Cough
  • Deep breaths with each cough — 2 per second until help arrives
  • Do not lie down

Stroke Identification

Recognising a Stroke
Remember the 1st Three Letters….. S. T. R.

S* Ask the individual to SMILE

T* Ask the person to TALK — SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE COHERENTLY
(i.e. I like Chicken Soup)

R* Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS

Stroke has a new indicator:
The Tongue.
New Sign of a Stroke — Stick out Your Tongue.
If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.
