A study at John Hopkins University tracked 639 adults for 12 years and found that the risk of mental health-related issues doubled with the presence of mild hearing loss. Participants with moderate hearing loss were three times more likely to develop dementia than those who did not experience hearing loss. Those who had severe hearing loss were five times more likely to have experienced mental health-related issues. In brain scans, the researchers found that decreased hearing could cause the brain to atrophy. The reduction in social connection associated with hearing loss could also be linked to mental health issues, the researchers say.
