What To Do When a Loved One Passes

There are few things in life more difficult than dealing with the passing of a loved one. It is one of the most unfortunate and heartbreaking events any of us will have to face.
During these times our sense of grief and loss can cloud our thoughts and leave us confused and frustrated as to what practical steps need to be taken. This mix of emotions is common, and it is important to take your time and know that you can seek help if you need it.
To help during these difficult and sometimes confusing times, ARTA has developed a checklist of things to consider, helping you navigate through it all.
Who must be contacted? Where are all the important documents? How do you arrange the funeral/celebration of life? What is a Burial Permit?
These are some of the most immediate concerns.
And what do you about pensions now and other survivor benefits? When do you do life insurance claims?
If you have any questions about your ARTA membership or ARTA Benefits coverage, please contact our Member Services team at 1-855-444-ARTA (2782).
Each Life is completely unique. Just as there is no one way to grieve, there is no one list that can capture all the tasks that must be done when a loved one passes. The list below is meant to be general, comprehensive, and accurate, but it cannot capture the specific concerns of each life lived. You may wish to print out and add to this list, using what you know of your loved one’s activities in life.
If you feel you need help to process all the emotions associated with this or any other life event, it is always important to remember you can reach out for help, that you’re not alone.
811 Health Link does provide 24/7 grief support. You can also find a list of resources with Alberta Health Services at albertahealthservices.ca/info/page15944.aspx. ARTA members with Extended Health Coverage can access free grief counselling through Greenshield.
