The True North by RV

Exploring our country in an RV can be a memorable experience, although many who might enjoy the journey are turned away by the upfront price or the additional costs associated with RV travel.
My wife and I started camping forty-five years ago. We’ve used tents, various trailers, and finally, our motorhome, which we still use today. In all our years of travel, I’ve learned that RVing can be very affordable — if you do it right.
By learning to do your own upkeep, planning your trips well, and making use of helpful technology, you can save money while enjoying the beautiful landscapes and attractions Canada has to offer.
Choose the Right RV
Not all RVs are created equal, especially when it comes to price. A smaller RV or a camper van will usually cost less, use less fuel, and is easier to drive and park. They can also fit into smaller spaces, giving you more options when looking for affordable places to camp.

Always check RV reviews, whether buying or renting, for information on their reliability, fuel efficiency, and any hidden upkeep costs. You can also learn about the pros and cons of different models by attending RV shows. When possible, find an RV that you can learn to fix yourself, avoiding hefty repair bills.
The loss of space in a smaller RV can be remedied with smart storage solutions. Use collapsible containers and bins to keep items tidy. Pack a kitchen tent to use as an extra room outdoors that is protected from rain and insects.
Plan Your Trip Wisely
When planning your RV trip, embrace the off-season when prices for campsites and attractions are often lower.
Many campgrounds offer discounts for extended stays, so consider staying longer in a single location instead of moving frequently. Private RV parks and golf resorts are also good places to look for lower rates and discounts.

Save on Fuel and Travel Safe
RVs use a significant amount of fuel when compared to personal vehicles, but there is a lot you can do to mitigate this cost. Use a GPS mapping app to plan your fuel stops in advance, and don’t forget to use your savings cards at the pump. GPS apps can also show you the most fuel-efficient route and help you avoid traffic.

Don’t neglect your RV maintenance tasks. Regularly check fluid levels, tire pressures, brakes, and lights to prevent breakdowns and ensure your RV is running efficiently. Having a roadside assistance plan can provide peace of mind and save you money and headaches in the event of a breakdown.
Limit Your Paid Activities
Plan free, nature-based activities, such as hikes, wildlife watching, and natural wonders. A National Park Pass gives you access to every national park in the country and is well worth the price. Many museums and cultural centres also offer free admission days, while many community festivals and cultural events also offer free entry; again, plan ahead! And never be afraid to ask if they offer a seniors’ discount.

When it comes to meals, save money by not eating out too often. Your RV likely has a kitchen, so use it! Also, use a large refillable water container rather than single-use bottles. This practice saves money and the environment at the same time.
Track Your Expenses and Experiences
Budgeting apps can help you track your spending and categorize your expenses for better visibility. I recommend reviewing your expenses each day and adjusting your plans if necessary. But your notebook shouldn’t only be about your budget — be sure to document your experiences, thoughts, and the beautiful places you visit. This diary creates a wonderful keepsake and a reminder of where you have been and what you liked best about each location.

Enjoy the journey, and use these savings tips to fund your next RV adventure!
